Gumbo Gala Will Raise $40,000 To Support Episcopal Place Residents
40 teams will compete for gumbo awards;
2,000 attendees will enjoy gumbo, live music and help 148 seniors and disabled adults

Professional and backyard teams will gather at Sloss Furnaces on June 23 to compete for the bragging rights to Birmingham's Best Gumbo.  40 teams will cook and serve gumbo as 2,000 event attendees enjoy New Orleans-style music and other entertainment.

Proceeds from the event will be used to help pay for vital support services at Episcopal Place, an affordable housing community for seniors and disabled adults who live on restricted incomes. Services such as van transportation to medical appointments, grocery stores, banks, and shopping centers, resident activities, subsidized noon meals and housekeeping, health screenings, and worship and pastoral care, help residents live independently and for as long as possible in Episcopal Place’s affordable housing community.

“This event was started six years ago in honor of several residents who came to live at Episcopal Place after surviving Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans,” said Tim Blanton, executive director of Episcopal Place.  “Thanks to great support from the community, Gumbo Gala has grown into a lively event with great gumbo and entertainment, and all proceeds go to support a worthwhile cause.”
