Episcopal Place to Commemorate 30th Anniversary

October 14 event to celebrate the role of the Episcopal Diocese and parishes in founding and sustaining the affordable housing community

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., (June 24, 2010) – Episcopal Place will mark its 30thanniversary with a dinner celebration to be held on October 14, 2010 at The Club in Birmingham. The Rt. Rev. Henry N. Parsley, Jr., Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama, will be the special guest at the event, which will celebrate the Episcopal Church’s 30-year commitment to the independent living facility.

The fundraising event, called The Bishop’s Dinner, will include cocktails, dinner, comments from the Bishop, and dancing to music by The Charles Giambrone Triad.  Tickets for the event are $75 per person.  Sponsorship opportunities are available for businesses and individuals who want to support the event and the mission of Episcopal Place.

“This first-of- its- kind event will bring together Episcopalians from across Central Alabama to celebrate their role in serving the long-term care needs of seniors and disabled adults,” said Tim Blanton, executive director of Episcopal Place. “For 30 years, Episcopal Place has been nurtured and supported by 3 Bishops, 12 founding parishes and countless volunteers and donors. It has changed hundreds of lives by giving residents an affordable and supportive community they call home.”

Located in Birmingham’s Southside, Episcopal Place provides affordable housing and support services to seniors and disabled adults who live on restricted incomes.  The idea for the facility was developed after an elderly Episcopal parishioner wrote to the late Bishop Furman Stough saying she could no longer live by herself and had no place to go.  Her plea echoed those of other seniors living on fixed incomes and overwhelmed by the cost and responsibility of living alone.

Inspired by the need and vision for a new ministry, Bishop Stough and parish leaders forged a unique partnership between the faith community, the non-profit sector and the government (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development).

Phase I of Episcopal Place opened in October, 1980 with 100 apartments. In 1992, Bishop Robert  Miller broke ground on Episcopal Place II, designed to add 41 apartments to the facility and address the growing need for affordable, independent living. More recently and with the support of Bishop Parsley, the Diocese and local parishes, Episcopal Place’s supportive services program has expanded to address the spiritual, emotional, intellectual, social and physical needs of today’s residents.  Pastoral care, transportation, noon meals, housekeeping and resident activities are just some of the services that make EP unique among affordable housing communities.

The facility serves 146 residents who live in 141 apartments with the help of rent subsidies from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). What sets Episcopal Place apart from other HUD communities is the scope of its supportive services program, which helps residents age in place and remain independent for as long as possible. The availability of these services also helps residents avoid early moves to nursing homes and saves Medicaid premature nursing home costs.

Proceeds from The Bishop’s Dinner will help fund the Supportive Services Program.
