Thank you for your interest in volunteering for Gumbo Gala. It is one of the largest gumbo competitions in the South and we expect around 3,000 guests. We couldn't pull it off without you! Descriptions of volunteer opportunities are listed below. Scroll down for the volunteer sign-up form, located below the job descriptions. Team Load-In ~ meet at 5:45AM to help teams quickly unload their vehicles inside the venue and carry items to their tent. Expect to lift items as heavy as 25 pounds.
Info Tent & Runner ~ help sell t-shirts at the information tent, answer questions for team members and guests, and deliver items and information to team members and other volunteers
Decorate ~ help Episcopal Place staff decorate the venue and grounds before the gates open at 11:00. Decorations will be supplied by Episcopal Place.
Team Concierge ~ volunteers will be assigned to a specific group of cook teams and vendors. Each concierge should introduce herself/himself to their assigned teams and check on them throughout the volunteer shift to ask if they need any supplies of have questions. Concierge volunteers will deliver supplies to teams as needed. (i.e. additional bowls, spoon, etc.)
Gate / Entrance ~ volunteers will welcome our guests and quickly check them in. Check-in will include will call, cash transactions, and credit card transactions. Our staff will train you how to use our credit card reader.
Greeters ~ will stand inside the entrance gate to welcome our guests, hand out spoons, and answer questions.
Beverage Tent - volunteers will sell both non-alcohol and alcohol beverages. These volunteers must be comfortable handling cash transactions and using our credit card readers. Episcopal Place staff will train you how to use credit card readers.
I.D. Checkers ~ will be stationed at a tent near the main entrance and will check guests' identification for those who wish to purchase alcoholic beverages. Guests who are age 21 or over will be given a wrist band to purchase alcoholic beverages.
Gumbo Runner (Judges' Tent) ~ gumbo runners will be stationed at the judges' tent to assist during the judging process.
Stage Manager Assistant ~ will work with the stage manager and band to keep the show moving. Duties will running from the stage to teams and escorting them on stage for awards. This volunteer must be able to move quickly at the venue through the crowds.
Kids' Zone ~ volunteers will be stationed in the kids' zone to monitor children. Please note that all children must be accompanies by their adults at all times. This volunteer position is to ensure safety of our young guests.
Team and Site Load Out ~ volunteers will assist teams and Episcopal Place staff at the end of the event. Light lifting will be required.
